Mobile Medical Apps: Limited FDA Intervention

In September, the FDA issued its Final Guidance on how it intends to regulate the growing field of so-called “Mobile Medical Apps” or “MMAs” (applications for electronic devices that can be used in the field of medicine). Although the guidance is targeted to manufacturers and distributers, and indicates that the FDA will, generally, be taking a hands-off approach, health care providers should be aware of the FDA’s position, not only to inform their own use of medical apps, but also to help educate their patient’s choices.
