In Memoriam: David W. Carroll (1939-2025)
It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of RCFP founding partner, David W. Carroll, Esq., at the age of 86.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 29, 1938, David graduated from North Providence High School in 1956 and from Providence College in 1960 with a degree in Political Science. He went on to attend Boston College Law School, graduating in 1963. In an extraordinary sequence of events, David sat for the Rhode Island bar exam prior to graduation to accommodate his commitment to the United States Army.
Following his military service, David returned to Rhode Island and joined the law firm Roberts & McMahon, founded by former Governor Dennis Roberts. That firm later became Roberts Carroll Feldstein & Pierce, where David would dedicate his career and become one of Rhode Island’s most prolific trial attorneys in the professional liability arena—earning over one hundred defense verdicts at trial.
David was a fierce advocate, known for his steadfast focus on his clients. In a 2013 Rhode Island Bar Journal interview for the “Trailblazers, Trendsetters, and Treasurers” series, David described his trial philosophy:
“The trial is not about me, the trial is about my client. My job is to make sure the client presents in a way that a jury can see him or her. If the jury believes the client, they’ll vote for the client.”
This approach, grounded in humility and empathy, defined David’s practice. He balanced an intense caseload with remarkable composure, inspiring confidence in clients and colleagues alike. Healthcare providers sought him out not only for his courtroom success, but for his humanity, warmth, and unwavering availability.
David’s presence in the office and the courtroom was unforgettable—whether confidently striding across Memorial Boulevard on his way to court, or sharing stories of his beloved wife, Meg, his daughters, and his grandchildren. He was a mentor, strategist, and friend to many, shaping countless careers with his wisdom and example.
They truly broke the mold after David. While his passing is a tremendous loss, his legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the careers he inspired, and the high standards of advocacy he championed.
David was truly one of a kind—awesome in every sense of the word.
